Last night I went to a popular vegan restaurant in a highly populated, nice part of Philly.
After paying for my food, I asked the cashier, “Quick question. Would you be interested in taking a pledge to denormalize violence against animals and to refuse to sit where animal bodies are being eaten?” I handed him a LP business card and he was like “Oh yeah. That sounds cool.” So I said, “are you a vegan?” and he said yes. I briefly explained that if we ask our friends and family to only eat vegan around us we can work towards denormalizing animal violence. He totally agreed, so I gave him a fork bracelet. At first he was confused and asked “how much?” and I explained that this is a grassroots movement happening across the United States, and that I’m just a normal guy who buys fork bracelets in bulk and tries to spread the pledge. I then asked if he knew anyone else that may be interested in taking the pledge and he pointed me to another vegan employee. I gave that guy the exact spiel and he said “I’m already ahead of the game I guess, because I already do that!” So he took the pledge too.
While I waited for my food to come out I noticed they were both walking around wearing the bracelets. I hope they keep wearing them and spread the pledge. I think having people in very visible spots wearing these bracelets will go a long way to spreading the pledge.
